Description

Description (Service) Ontario Works Financial Assistance provides a monthly allowance based on family size, housing costs and income. Includes a monthly drug benefit card.
  • Discretionary Benefits - Health related benefits may include dental care for adults, vision care for adults, emergency dental services, vision care for adults, special diet allowance, health care supplies, medical transportation funds, prosthetic devices, funerals and burials, heating payment and payments for low cost heating energy conservation measures. Non health related benefits, vocational training and retraining, moving expenses and an other special services, items.
  • Mandatory Benefits - Health Benefits, prescription drug coverage, vision care for dependent children in temporary care, dental care for children aged 17 years and under whose families are residing in a First Natioons community (including children in temporary care), diabetic supplies, surgical supplies and dressings, medical transportation costs $15 and over, consumer contribution for assisted devices program (ADP), batteries and necessary repairs for mobility devices, extended health benefits, Guide dog, Full Time Employment Benefits, Other Employment and Employment Assistance Activities Benefit, Advance (up front) childcare, Transition Child Benefit.
  • Employment Assistance - clients 18-65 years must participate in employment assistance activities unless they are living with a serious disability or illness or caring for preschool children.
  • Employment Resource Centre - walk-in job search centre offers:
    • access to computers, internet, fax, photocopier, telephone
    • resource materials, job banks, labour market information
    • assistance with resumes
    • referrals to job counselling and training
  • Employment Start-Up Benefit - covers costs related to starting a job or work placement.
  • Families with Children - assistance includes newborn child allowance, child care start-up costs, basic dental care for children.
  • Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) - helps young parents ages 16-21 finish high school, improve parenting skills, locate and maintain employment.
  • Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP) - assists low income residents including seniors, OW and ODSP recipients with rent or mortgage, utility, energy and heat arrears. Staff assist community members with housing searches, tenant and landlord education, tenant and landlord mediation, referrals to other community services on homelessness and affordable housing issues.
Saugeen Social Services also offers:
  • volunteer placements
  • job search programs - based on individual's skills, experience and circumstances
  • employment placement and job matching service
  • basic adult education upgrading, high school upgrading, literacy and basic skills
  • job skills training, development of skills for specific jobs
  • on-the-job training
  • referrals to self-employment programs
For individuals who are not in receipt of Ontario Works (OW) or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), Emergency Assistance is available for those facing a crisis or emergency who have no immediate access to other supports. This assistance is temporary in nature. To apply for this benefit, contact the local OW office. See Emergency Assistance Online site for more information.

Public Comments Clients may access applications for Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) through their OW Caseworker.

There is no program called Student Welfare. Students who are between 16-18 and attending school but not living at home must meet strict criteria to be approved for assistance.
