The mission of SFBLF is to Fight Diabetes through education and advocacy with an emphasis on youth.

The SFBLF Diabetes Management and Education Centre (DMEC) is located at the Banting Homestead Heritage Park, a 107-acre site and the birthplace of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin and Canada's first Nobel Laureate.

On-site programs include instructor-led School Tours, Group Tours, Day Camp Field Trip support, general public access. All visits must be scheduled in advance. Other Programs are offered through the website and there are special events and awards programs [all described below].

The DMEC complex includes:
  • The restored, historic Octagonal Drive Shed, used as a gathering place
  • The restored/adapted historic Banting Farmhouse
  • Heritage reception and exhibit building
  • Artifacts, memorabilia, paintings, prints and manuscripts created by, or relating to, Sir Fred are arranged in 'themes' throughout the complex; e.g., diabetes facts and statistics, living with diabetes, diabetes at school, Insulin Discovery team, discovery process, lasting impact of the discovery, Canadians and the Nobel prize, Banting the Artist and soldier, monument to 'Salute the Discovery Team'
  • Banting Legacy Trail, a public walking trail, is available daily from dawn to dusk and includes information exhibits, exercise equipment area and outdoor percussion musical instruments
  • Engraved paver patio, gardens and picnic area free to use
  • A BBQ available to support your event (book in advance - a fee applies)

  • Links to peer support networks and assessed software applications available via mobile devices [for youth living with diabetes]

SFBLF hosts special events and provides various awards:
  • Annual Banting Legacy events in support of World Diabetes Day and Sir Fred's birthday anniversary [November 14]
  • Annual Education Awards to support the higher education aspirations of Grade 12 students living with diabetes
  • Annual Awards to persons who have lived with insulin for 50 plus years
