Lawyers provide immediate legal assistance to low-income individuals who would otherwise be unrepresented and unassisted in the courtroom. Lawyers quickly assess a client's legal situation and provide advice, information and representation. May include:

• advice about legal rights, obligations and the court process
• help to negotiate and settle issues
• review and preparation of court documents
• assistance in the courtroom for child protection, garnishment and support hearings
• help in interim, pre-trial and show cause hearings for issues such as custody, access, child protection or child support where the issues are not complicated
• referral to other resources including mediation, a legal aid worker in the courthouse, a district office, a community legal clinic or the application for representation by a private lawyer
