Description:

The Indigenous Prenatal Nutrition Program offers culturally relevant, community-based support to improve the health and well-being of Indigenous mothers and their newborns from prenatal to 6 months of age. The program aims to address challenges that may affect maternal and infant health, while also supporting fathers, extended families, and women considering pregnancy. With a focus on both physical and emotional health, the program provides culturally grounded guidance to foster healthy pregnancies, promote family bonding, and ensure positive health outcomes for both mothers and infants.

Objective:

To improve maternal and infant health by providing holistic, culturally informed support throughout pregnancy and the early months of life. The program seeks to enhance the caregiving capacity of mothers and fathers, strengthen family dynamics, and support the development of healthy attachment between parents and their children.

Program Services:

  • Quarterly nurse visits
  • Prenatal Health & Lifestyle Supports: Education and resources for maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
  • Infant & Child Development Milestones: Guidance on tracking infant growth and developmental milestones.
  • Breastfeeding Education & Support: Assistance with breastfeeding techniques and overcoming challenges.
  • Nutritional Support: Biweekly delivery of fruits and vegetables, and monthly meal kits to ensure proper nutrition.
  • Drop-in Supports: Ongoing access to support for parents as needed.
  • Traditional/Cultural Celebrations: Community events that honor Indigenous culture and traditions.
  • Mom Circles: Social gatherings for mothers, featuring crafts, guest speakers, and opportunities for bonding.

Eligibility Indigenous women who are pregnant or in the prenatal stage, including fathers and extended family members. Women considering pregnancy who are seeking guidance and support. Open to families with children up to 6 months of age. Urban Indigenous families in need of support for healthy pregnancy outcomes, infant development, and family wellness.
