Perform some or all of the following duties

issue subpoenas summonses and warrants, including search warrants
administer oaths (court related matters only)
conduct bail hearings
peace bond applications
release defendants on judges' orders and explain rights and obligations

Justices of the Peace are no longer available to the public on weekends
