Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grey Bruce & West Simcoe (BBBSGBWS) is seeking energetic, dedicated volunteers to join our growing organization. We are a non-profit charity, providing mentorship services to youth ages 6-18 in both schools and communities. As a vibrant, collaborative, community-focused organization we believe in creating communities where young people belong and are empowered to unlock their potential.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Community-Based Volunteer
- Join us as a Mentor in our community-based volunteer program. Connect with a local youth (ages 6-18) in your community. Spend one hour a week engaging in fun, skill-building activities and make an impact! (One year commitment)
School-Based Volunteer
- School-based volunteers spend one hour weekly connecting with a group of Mentees (ages 6-16) within the school environment. Mentors are provided with programming that supports educational success. Join us as a school-based Mentor and make an impact! (Four month commitment)
Group-Based Volunteer
- Group program volunteers support the BBBSGBWS team in a variety of unique settings, including our Outdoor Wellness Program, Youth Council meetings and Big Bunch events. This position is great for students. (Flexible commitment)
Agency Volunteer
- With the BBBSGBWS team engage in fundraising support and be a BBBSGBWS brand ambassador. Join our team at local youth events, connect with children, youth, families and make an impact!

The GTHS Cat Care Team reports to the Cat Care Coordinator. Whereas Cat Care Team Members are usually assigned a specific room (an Adoptions Room or a Quarantine / Isolation Room), this Cat Care Team Member will provide all-round Cat Care support, based on day-to-day needs. This volunteer will be assigned to Quarantine / Isolation Room 4 (which is used sporadically for cats who are sick and aren’t quite ready for adoption), but may be directed to assist in Room 3 if no cats are in Room 4. When no assistance is required in either Quarantine / Isolation Room, this Team Member will support volunteers in the Adoption Rooms. Responsibilities include providing nutrition, as well as mental and physical stimulation or interaction, to the feline residents in Room 4 and/or other areas they are assisting within. All Cat Care Team Members are responsible for sweeping and mopping the floor, dishes, laundry, and maintaining clean and organized litter, feeding stations, kitten / cat kennels and communal areas.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Maintain clean and organized litter, kennels, counter tops and communal areas (shelving, windows, etc.)
- Disinfect toys (loose and in kennels), scratching posts, wooden boxes, climbing apparatus, etc.
- Feed cats / kittens wet food (as appropriate), provide fresh water and maintain feeding stations
- Wash up any dirty animal dishes
- Perform laundry tasks (gather dirty laundry and assist with washing, drying and folding linens)
- Dispose of garbage and recyclables
- Wipe all surfaces after use
- When not working out of Room 4:
- Assist in Room 3, upon assignment by Cat Care Coordinator
- Liaise with Adoption Room Team Members to assist where needed
- Assist the Cat Care Coordinator with ad hoc needs
- As required / upon request:
- Place cats ready for ‘moving up’ into carriers
- Carry cats in carriers to the appropriate room / kennel
- Weigh cats with assistance from the Cat Care Coordinator
- Clean floors in the Animal Kitchen
- Interact with cats for socialization and enrichment purposes
- Stimulate and interact with cats (includes grooming, play and snuggles)
- Reduce cat stress and improve their overall wellness
- Provide cognitive stimulation and encourage curiosity
- Provide places for cats to hide and perch, as appropriate
- Stimulate cats’ hunting instinct
- Make enrichment items (food puzzles, cat cabins…)
- Identify and report any behavioural concerns
- Follow appropriate protocol, policies and procedures
- Use online Contact List & Schedule to reflect any absences and to coordinate shift coverage
Emergency Boarding Foster Volunteers provide a safe, loving and temporary home for pets whose owners cannot currently look after them due to an emergency situation (in hospital, rehabilitation or escaping from domestic violence). Boarding is provided for dogs or cats, based on the species you decide upon, and will range from 1-6 months. You must have the ability to separate the foster animal from any pets in your home by keeping them in a separate room, if necessary. We will provide training and all the supplies you need.
In 2023, our Animal Care Team looked after more than 1500 animals onsite and, thanks to our Foster Volunteers, 1044 additional cats and dogs were cared for in loving foster homes.
Description
Emergency Boarding Foster Volunteers are responsible for helping the cat/dog in their care thrive until they are ready to be reclaimed by their owner. This will include feeding the animals at least twice a day, possibly more, cleaning litter boxes (for cats), exercising (for dogs) and socializing the animals. It may also include administering oral medications.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Maintain clean and tidy environment
- Provide treats, food, clean water and clean bedding as required
- Clean and change kitty litter, as required
- Bathe and groom dog, as necessary and if comfortable doing so
- Provide a structured and loving environment
- Assist in the maintenance of the animal’s health and welfare (includes exercise for dogs)
- Administer medication, as required and as instructed
- Ensure any veterinary appointments are kept
- Ensure animal is safe and secure
- Return animal to GTHS Animal Centre upon request
- Follow appropriate protocol, policies and procedures
In the absence of any federal or provincial government funding, the GTHS organizes multiple events annually to raise much-needed funds. We are seeking talented, outgoing and passionate individuals who can help us reach our fundraising goals and, in turn, support thousands of homeless animals.
This is NOT a traditional fundraising role – our Fundraising Committee Members use their unique talents and interests to make our events a success (and thereby help us raise funds). Our ‘signature’ events planned for 2025 are Walk for Pets – June 14, Golf for Pets – July 7 and the Furball Gala – October 18.
As a result of as our programs and services, every year more than 1500 homeless cats and dogs are provided shelter, 1300 animals find a new home, 4000 youth are positively impacted, approximately 3000 spay/neuter/dental/specialized surgeries are performed, and in excess of 1000 pets are supported through our Pet Pantry program.
Description
Fundraising Committee Members have drive, passion and ideas to support the implementation and success of our events – all while having fun! Each Committee Member will assume specific roles and responsibilities based on their strengths (for example: marketing, networking, people management, fundraising, sourcing…), and will be involved from inception and initial planning, all the way through to execution of the event itself and post-event activities. Bring your strengths but be prepared to pitch in! Members will provide progress updates at committee meetings so, as a team, we can evaluate where we are and realign when necessary; to ensure the success of our events. Committee members may also be expected to develop existing and potential sponsor / donor relationships.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Attend regular committee meetings (in-person and/or via Zoom or Teams)
- Participate in event development from inception through completion
- Activities (as determined as part of an Action Plan) based on each Committee Member’s experience and skill set, and event needs
- Assist with event set-up and take down

Overview & Impact: The Food Fairy is integral to maintaining the welfare of our cats and kittens. This position starts early in the morning to ensure that all feline residents have finished eating prior to the Cat Care Team coming onsite to prepare the Adoption Rooms for the day and in readiness for any medications to be administered. In 2023, our Cat and Dog Care Teams cared for more than 1500 animals onsite at our Animal Centre.
Description: The GTHS Food Fairy reports to the Cat Care Coordinator and ensures that all kittens and cats in the building are fed. Other duties include topping up water, washing food dishes, tidying, record keeping as necessary and following the feeding chart accurately.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week. This position can start any time from 6am, for duties to be concluded by 8am. A minimum commitment of 6 months is required.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Feed cats and kittens in Adoption Rooms, Lobby and Isolation / Quarantine Rooms appropriate wet food (based on dietary requirements) or remove food, as appropriate

Board Commitment:
The Board meets at least eight times a year over Teams and generally takes the summer months off (as well as December, although this fluctuates based on need). Board Members are expected to participate in occasional activities such as fundraisers, board subcommittees (when required), and participation in email discussions (only when in-person or virtual discussion is not possible).
Meetings are held virtually, ensuring accessibility for all Board members located throughout a large region. Board meetings are often not more than one hour in length, given members are expected to have reviewed the Board report beforehand.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- To uphold resolutely the interest of CONTACT Community Services, avoiding conflicts of interest in personal or other business.
- To maintain the confidentiality of restricted Board information.
- To be open to serving as an active member on at least one board appointed committee (if possible).

Description
Cat Care & Centre Volunteers report to the Cat Care Coordinator (CCC) and liaise with their teammates to share the afternoon routine and duties. Shared responsibilities include ensuring our Animal Centre is clean and tidy, rooms and carts are fully stocked, and feline residents receive mental and physical stimulation in addition to food and clean litter.
Time Commitment
Approximately 3 hours per week. This position starts at 1pm until approximately 4pm. A minimum commitment of 6 months is required.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Coordinate with fellow Cat Care & Centre Volunteers to share the afternoon’s routine and duties, including rotating responsibility for ‘front of house’ and ‘back of house’
- Cleaning and tidying:
- Communal areas’ surfaces and floors are cleaned, tidied and disinfected (communal areas = Volunteer Cubby and Desk, Animal Kitchen, Human Kitchen, lunchroom, hallways and washrooms)
- Medical Intake Room floors are swept and mopped
- Hallway carts are sanitized
- Laundry (washing, drying, folding linens)
- Dishes (wash up dirty animal dishes, load / empty dishwasher)
- Disinfect any used cat carriers and / or kennels and put them away neatly
- Scoop litter boxes and, as needed, disinfect litter pans
- Dispose of garbage and recyclables
- Hallway carts, Animal Kitchen and all Cat Care Rooms are replenished with food, litter and required supplies
- Feed wet food to kittens and adult cats (as directed by CCC)
- Top up water and dry food (if needed)
- Fill out kennel cards to ensure accurate record keeping
- Assist with cat kennels, as needed
- Remove contents of empty kennels for adopted cats and terminal clean
- Ensure post-surgical cats’ kennels are set back up once each cat has safely recovered from anesthesia
- Interact with cats for socialization and enrichment* purposes
- Adapt activities based on cats being interacted with
- Stimulate and interact with cats (includes grooming, play and snuggles)
- Provide company for cats that are “social eaters” to help them eat better

WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be physically able to complete the tasks listed above (will involve bending, kneeling, lifting, walking, mopping). Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. gloves, gowns and booties MUST be worn when volunteering in Room 3 and/or in Room 4. Gloves are always to be worn when cleaning litterboxes, stool or vomit.
Reporting to the Director of Medicine and Hospital Registered Veterinary Technician, the Hospital Assistant Volunteer will be responsible for maintaining the Operating Room and prep area, as well as overseeing the maintenance and packing of surgical instruments.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Wash / sterilize surgical instruments (by hand and / or using the autoclave)
- Make up surgical packs in line with the next day’s surgeries
- Maintain an orderly Surgical Room and Prep Room
- Disinfect / sterilize surgical equipment

- Clean and disinfect cages, surfaces, counter tops and surrounding areas

Overview & Impact: The GTHS Animal Hospital contains an Operating Room, Treatment Room, Examination Room, Pharmacy, X-Ray Room and a Hospital Intake / Recovery Area.
Having an onsite hospital ensures animals receive timely, thorough and comprehensive care, saves dozens of daily phone calls, reduces trips back and forth to veterinary clinics, dramatically decreases the stress on the GTHS animals, and leads to the additional benefit of earlier adoption availability; so these animals find their forever home quickly.
The GTHS Animal Hospital is one of the only accessible spay/neuter hospitals serving Bruce, Grey and part of Simcoe County that performs 3,000 surgeries annually (an average of 50 surgeries per week), and subsidizing ~$770K in veterinary costs each year.
To promote pet wellness and safety, 1,858 rabies vaccinations and 1,767 microchips are administered to GTHS Animal residents and community clients on an annual basis.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Community Programs Coordinator (and the Director of Medicine), the Hospital Discharge Volunteer will be responsible for discharging animals to the public after their Hospital appointment / surgery, as well as overseeing the cleanliness of the Hospital Intake Room.
- Public hospital discharges
- Speak to pet owners to relay how the surgery went and if there were any concerns
- Ensure pet owners understand post-op and medication instructions
- Review microchip information, as appropriate
- Ensure onesie or cone is supplied, if appropriate
- Return cats to their owners and coordinate with the Hospital RVT to bring dogs out to their owners
- Accept payment for add-on services, as appropriate
- Set up the Hospital Intake Room for the following morning’s intakes; including making kennel cards and labels for the next day’s animals
- Set up dog kennels in the garage/storage area, if additional kennels are required
- Clean and tidy the Hospital Intake Room once animals have departed; including wiping down kennels, tidying up, sweeping and mopping the floor
- Assist the Community Programs Coordinator or Hospital staff as required
- Follow appropriate protocol, legislation and regulations
Assist staff to deliver various programs such as crafts, bingo, outings and trips for adults with diverse disabilities. Please note - due to COVID, we have transitioned all in-person programs to virtual activities. When it is safe to do so, we will return to in-person programs at our Centre but at a reduced capacity. We will introduce a hybrid approach that involves in-person and virtual.
- For now, we require volunteers to do:
- Telephone check-ins with our Consumers
- Organizational/administrative assistance for our Connecting with Seniors program
- Opportunity to do crafting or recipe videos for our social media outlets
- Other opportunities that can be done safely from home.
Katimavik’s National Experience is an amazing opportunity for any Canadian citizens, permanent residents or landed refugees aged 17 – 25 who are looking for 22 weeks of creative learning, community engagement, Truth and Reconciliation, and self-discovery! Youth will live in a group with up to 10 of their peers in two separate communities throughout the course of the program. During the program they engage in 32 valuable volunteer hours a week, learn how to manage a house, make lifelong friends, and gain confidence that they themselves can make an impactful difference in our country. This is a fully funded opportunity where participants’ travel expenses, living accommodations, food costs, and daily needs are covered. All they will need to bring is their dedication, empathy, and commitment to making a better world!

- The history of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the importance of Truth and Reconciliation;
- The benefits and impact of civic engagement;

The goal of VON’s SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together)® Exercise and Falls Prevention program is to enable adults 55+ to maintain independence, improve quality of life and to ultimately promote healthy aging. This functional exercise program can be found in various communities throughout Grey-Bruce.
VON SMART and Falls Prevention classes are led by volunteers who VON trains (2 days of practical plus the theory) and certify. Weekly we offer over 50 Level 1 and Level 2 classes in Grey Bruce with over 1,000 participants! We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 hours a week (one class) but have flexible schedules for those who are away for long periods of time. We are looking for volunteer instructors for both levels of classes.
These classes are offered free of charge to participants within Grey Bruce communities.

In 2015, we ran our first ever Butt Blitz — an action-oriented campaign focused on raising public awareness about cigarette litter, while simultaneously removing as much of it from the environment as possible.
Cigarette butts account for 1 in 5 pieces of litter that we find at our cleanups. These small cigarette butts are one of the most common forms of litter and when not disposed of properly, they cause negative impacts on local ecosystems and health.
Each spring, volunteers from across Canada pick up cigarette butts in their local communities, then send them to TerraCycle Canada for recycling. The social impact of this event is just as important as the environmental impact, as it helps prevent cigarette butt litter from ending up on the ground in the future!
We are looking for Butt Blitz Coordinators in communities across Canada to join us in expanding our impact by engaging volunteers locally throughout April!
As a Butt Blitz Coordinator, you are dedicating your time throughout April to help reduce the amount of cigarette litter in your local community and create a safer, healthier environment. You will help to spread awareness and connect others within your community to get involved in this initiative to reduce cigarette waste.
All you need to participate is a pair of gloves, an up-cycled container (e.g., an old yogurt tub) to collect your butts in, and an interest in improving your local environment!
Coordinator Responsibilities:

Participate in cigarette litter cleanups to contribute to the overall goal of removing 1 million cigarette butts

The Georgian Triangle Humane Society is a not-for-profit charity that provides abandoned, neglected and abused domestic animals a second chance in life at a forever home. The Adoptions Team facilitates the adoption and subsequent retention of approximately 1300 homeless animals annually, and the Cat Adoption Counselor contributes towards this success by answering questions about cat ownership, the adoption process and the cats and kittens available for adoption. This role is integral to matching the right cat (personality type, energy level, special home requirements, etc.) with the right adopter.
Description
Reporting to the Adoptions Coordinator, the Cat Adoption Counselor prepares adoption kits, answers questions about the cats and kittens we have available for adoption. The Cat Adoption Counselor also assists the public with the identification of cats and kittens in the adoption rooms, provides assistance with the completion of adoption applications and facilitates the adoption. There is also the opportunity to attend off-site adoption events in the community.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Consistent and open communication with Adoptions Coordinator
- Review information on cats available for adoption (name, age, background, medical / special needs, etc.)
- Spend time with cats to assist with the perfect match
- Answer visitors’ and potential adopters’ questions about cats available for adoption

Overview & Impact: The Georgian Triangle Humane society is a not-for-profit charity that works to provide innovative programs and compassionate services to pets and people in the south Georgian Bay region and beyond. Because the GTHS receives no government funding, we rely on the generosity of our donors and supporters to fulfil our mission of delivering innovative programs and compassionate services that enhance the lives of pets in need and the people that care for them. Position Summary: Donor Engagement Volunteers report to the Senior Manager of Philanthropy (or delegate) to gain guidance in fostering positive relationships with donors. by contacting them upon becoming a regular donor or after donating to a ‘signature’ event or campaign. These volunteers will contact identified regular donors or signature event donors and may participate in regular Donor Relations Team meetings to collaborate on ideas that will enhance the relationships that leadership and legacy donors have with the GTHS, to inspire higher levels of giving.
This is a remote volunteer position (with occasional onsite activities) and volunteers will utilize their own computer or tablet, telephone and internet.

Donor Stewardship Volunteers report to the Fundraising Administrator and foster positive relationships with donors by thanking them (by telephone, email, letter or greeting card) for their in-kind support of GTHS programs and services. These volunteers are invited to collaborate on ideas that will enhance the relationship donors have with the GTHS, to inspire giving.
This is a hybrid volunteer position. Depending on tasks undertaken, volunteers will be home-based and utilize their own computer or tablet, telephone and internet (with occasional onsite activities), or may assist with written communications before, during or after a scheduled shift at the Animal Centre (time and space permitting) and continue any remaining tasks at home.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The GTHS Animal Hospital contains an Operating Room, Treatment Room, Examination Room, Pharmacy, X-Ray Room and a Hospital Intake / Recovery Area.
Having an onsite hospital ensures animals receive timely, thorough and comprehensive care, saves dozens of daily phone calls, reduces trips back and forth to veterinary clinics, dramatically decreases the stress on the GTHS animals, and leads to the additional benefit of earlier adoption availability; so these animals find their forever home quickly.
The GTHS Animal Hospital is one of the only accessible spay/neuter hospitals serving Bruce, Grey and part of Simcoe County that performs 3,000 surgeries annually (an average of 50 surgeries per week), and subsidizing ~$770K in veterinary costs each year.
To promote pet wellness and safety, 1,858 rabies vaccinations and 1,767 microchips are administered to GTHS animal residents and community clients on an annual basis.

Reporting to the Director of Medicine and Hospital Registered Veterinary Technician, the Hospital Recovery Volunteer will be responsible for maintaining an orderly Recovery Room, assisting with recovering patients and the movement of animals.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Set up the Recovery Room for the day
- This includes making sure kennels have towels and a floor recovery space is set up for large dogs
- Assist with transporting animals into and out of the hospital, as needed
- Assist post-surgery
- Handle, restrain and care for animals
- Monitor animals’ recovery post-surgery (vital signs)
- Report any abnormalities in recovery to the Veterinary Technician
- Help administer vaccines / medications / microchips, under direction
- Help ensure all animals treated in the hospital have records that are maintained accurately
- Assist post-recovery
- Return recovered GTHS animals to the appropriate location onsite at the Animal Centre
- Place recovered pets into the appropriate cat carrier or dog crate
- Maintain an orderly Recovery Room
- Store vaccines / medications / microchips appropriately

We empower young girls and women to be everything they want to be, and as a volunteer, you will help make that happen! Our volunteers support girls as they build confidence, develop new skills, and become leaders in their communities.
As part of a unit’s leadership team, you’ll facilitate fun and engaging program activities, like scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, outdoor exploration, games, and more. You can choose to work with girls in one of five branches: Sparks (age 5-6), Embers (age 7-8), Guides (age 9-11), Pathfinders (age 12-14), or Rangers (age 15-17).
