The Simcoe Muskoka Multiple Sclerosis Society is looking for volunteers to assist with the annual Mandarin MS Walk that is held in Midland, Barrie, Orillia, New Tecumseth (Alliston) & Collingwood each year the first Sunday in May.  
 
This event requires volunteers for one day only, to set up and then take down tables, distribute refreshments,food prep and serving, man pit stops and register walkers.

Programs include:  
 
Big Brothers Traditional Program - A Big Brother is matched with a Little Brother, ensuring they have similar interests to spend one-to-one time together to talk, play ball, watch a movie or just hang out together  
 
Big Sisters Traditional Program - A Big Sister is matched with a Little Sister ensuring they have similar interests to spend one-to-one time together, developing a friendship and engage in mutually desired activities  
 
Couples for Kids - Volunteer with your partner or spouse and be matched to a Little Brother or Little Sister to give the gift of friendship to a child  
 
In-School Mentoring- The program takes place at the child’s school, during the school year. The mentor spends one hour per week doing a fun activity or just talking with a child who could use a friend * employers are encouraged to give employees the time during the work day to volunteer 
 
Boys Club for boys 9-12 years of age - The group meets Tuesday's at 6:30 at Connaught Public School * includes a wide variety of recreational activities, call for locations and times 
 
Cops, Kids and Communities - Officers, Auxiliary Officers and Administrative Staff from Collingwood and the Huronia West OPP detachments have joined forces with BBBS to allow children to spend time doing fun, healthy activities such as bowling, swimming and touring the OPP and fire stations while promoting the basic principles of respect, understanding, healthy eating and an active lifestyle 
 
Homework Club - Currently operates on Wednesday after school in Collingwood * children are able to attend these sessions on a drop-in basis * healthy snacks are provided, call for locations and times 
 
Summer Camp Programs - Clients who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience camp life or to travel outside their region are given priority but program is accessible to any client 
 
Behind the scenes - There are many committee and project roles for volunteers who have different schedules and different assets to bring to the table * some shorter term projects include arranging our yearly raffle (donations, tickets), working on furthering our endowment fund project, working on furthering our capital project for a larger and owned office space, Bowl for Kids Support to work on planning items for our big bowling event, creation of our signature lifesaver matchbooks * call us for more details

The 2020 Defeat Depression Walks will take place late May/Early June 2020 
 
The Defeat Depression campaign is a national fundraising campaign designed to allow individuals and organizations to raise funds in support of their local mental health programs and services. The campaign has grown into a national movement bringing much-needed funds, awareness of mental health issues while fighting mental health stigma one event at a time. 
 
Planning and organizing the Walk/Runs takes time, passion and creative thinking. With support from volunteers and Mood Disorders Society of Canada’s staff, you will be a part of something truly extraordinary in your community. Although this is a national campaign, local success depends on volunteers like you. With your community insight, you will raise awareness, encourage participation, and drive fundraising results. 
 
Available Positions: 
Event Chair/Co-Chairs oversees all elements of the event from start to finish, liaises with Mood Disorders Society of Canada, attends host conference calls during the planning process, and explores new ideas and suggestions on how to make the event successful, responsible for financial tracking of the event 
 
Volunteer Coordinator recruit volunteers to help on the day of the event and/or with tasks throughout the planning process, assigns responsibilities as needed, and builds relationships within the community 
 
Local Sponsorship Coordinator – you will recruit build local connections, new sponsors, and strengthen relationships with existing sponsors to offset some event expenses and contribute to the local fundraising revenue. Working with your committee and Defeat Depression Staff, you are responsible for acquiring local cash, and in-kind sponsorships, ensure that sponsor obligations are fulfilled, and each sponsor feels the true value of a partnership with the Defeat Depression Campaign. 
 
Communications/Marketing Coordinator oversees promotion of the event, brainstorms how to attract participants and sponsors, engages local media and hosts media on the day of the event, etc. 
 
Social Media Coordinator oversees the event Facebook page, handles posts and responds to inquiries on social media, engages local stakeholders, helps promote the event through social media, shares pictures post event, directs people to engage with YouTube and Flickr 
 
Logistics Coordinator books the location for the event, plans the walk or run course, obtains all required permits/approvals, plans for tents/water/parking/supplies on the day-of
